Okay, I am telling the world! The book I am writing this year/the project I am doing this year is that I am being a Girl Scout! For my 50th year, I am going to do the work of 50 badges (plus 3 badges that are regional), and I am going to call them badges even though the Girl Scouts refer to them as Interest Projects. Too many years as a Girl Scout has "Badges" stuck in my head, and I just cannot change to another term.
I have chosen 10 badges from each of the 5 categories, and am writing down and photographing all of my progress. Thus far, the All About Birds badge has been my favorite. I am learning a great deal about birds and am enjoying (although not as much as the cats) watching the birds at our feeders.
For one of this badge's activities, I needed to identify 5 area birds. I did that quickly, and am continuing to identify birds at our feeders. I haven't gotten very good at photographing them yet, but below are some pictures with identifications. If anyone has information about any of these birds, or if I have misidentified any, please let me know.
Oh! Before the pictures, I would just like to say that I miss cardinals! We don't get them out west, and besides being beautiful birds on their own, they are always especially stunning against the snow.
This is one of the 5 Varied Thrushes, although you cannot see its bright orange coloring in this photo. They are large birds, and very striking. Unlike the tiny birds, they spook easily, so I have not been able to get many pictures of them. They visit multiple times during the day.
Well, this is not a great Varied Thrush shot, but you can (perhaps) see the orange. This one is waiting a turn at the suet in our mimosa tree. Often, one will peck at the suet and the others eat what it drops off the ground.
I don't have photos of the bushtits, chickadees (we get two types: Black-capped and Chestnut-backed), woodpeckers (not as frequent as I would like, but we have had two: a Downey and a Northern Red-breasted Flicker), Jays (we had 2 jays, and I don't know if they were female Stellar's or Scrubs; they looked like Eastern Blue Jays to me, and were gone before I could get a good look), and another bird I will get to in a minute. This is our Townsend's Warbler. As I understand it, this is not an unheard of bird to have here, but it is not super common, either. There seem to be two that show up (a male and a female?) and their bright yellow color makes them stand out.
This is one of the many Oregon Juncos we have. Although not as colorful as the other birds that visit (although more colorful than the bushtits, but they are small and round and fuzzy and therefore irresistibly cute), I do like them a great deal. They have been faithful eaters at our bird food buffet, and they have figured out that the cats are indoor cats, so they don't spook.
We also have a very territorial squirrel we have named Nutty Buddy. But the big news, and I do need help here from birders, is that I saw a hummingbird this morning! I was so pleased and excited; I stopped moving, and watched it go from one suet to the other before flying off. It looked black with a bright red throat, and was quite tiny. I looked through my birding books to see what type of hummingbird it was, and it looked like a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. However, according to my books, they live only east of the Mississippi. I thought that maybe the rain made it look black, and it was actually dark green, brown, blue, or purple. But none of the hummingbirds I saw in my Birds of the Pacific Northwest seem to fit what I saw.
I hope it returns, and I hope to get a picture.
For this badge, I also need to set up a feeding station (which I have done, but hope to add to), buy binoculars (i have done this), learn how to use them (need to do), participate in a bird count (need to do), interview a person who helps injured wild birds (need to do), and view some art works featuring birds and make a piece of art featuring birds. I may end up making multiple art pieces, as I am really groovin' on this badge!
But I continue to work on other badges as well. Below are two photos; one is the bead and shell bracelet I made, and one is the bracelet, the scented bath salts I made, and my collection of rocks--all for different badges! I also watched the movie We Are Marshall, which is where I got my M.A., and liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

I love watching my birds. Today I saw my pair of cardinals, 4-5 bluejays, several tufted titmouse, lots of chickadees, hairy woodpecker, assorted sparrows, etc.
We got about 10 inches of snow today... finally. We have not had much snowfall yet so I enjoyed a Snow Day. Did a little snowshoeing, paperwork for my teacher certification renewal...snore...Dan made a great Beef Burgundy in the crock pot...smelled so good and tasted even better...

They will be all called badges, no more interest projects. and a number of them will be discontinued!!! The books will become one book with both the handbook and badges in them. This is all supposed to happen by this September!!
